The History of the NHL

NHL is an American organization offering professional ice hockey. It was developed in 1917 after the suspension of then NHA (National Hockey Association)  NHL consisted of four Canadian teams, later on becoming a big name in North American sports.

The teams present during the founding were Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs. Then, NHL expanded its operations in the U.S. in 1924 when Boston Bruins got into the league.

Later in 1926, NHL did so well that it owned the Stanley Cup, an ice hockey supremacy award.

Currently, the NHL has headquarters in New York City.

What Makes the NHL So Popular?

Hockey tops the list of the most popular sports in New Jersey. Notably, the game evolved with a big team holding the state’s name. New Jersey Devils is a supreme team where the big boys play and the Garden State is the proud home to this giant team.

Established in 1974 in Kansas City, New Jersey Devils has made its way up. In the start, things were thick for the team. It didn’t manage to win awards at the time. But as time went by, things changed for the better. For instance, the team has won the coveted Stanley Cup a couple of times. That is in 1995, 2000, and 2003.

NHL is also popular in NJ as several sportsbooks offer it. Nothing beats the excitement of finding a reliable site where you can place promising bets on the NHL. NJ sportsbooks that offer NHL betting have been designed to suit all your needs.

There are mobile apps, live betting features, and Geo-comply software all in the app. As a result, the league is now popular in the state, with a large following. NHL betting generates revenue for the economy. Since acquiring a license only needs a few bucks, many sportsbooks are now launching without straining.

With $500,000, you are free to hold a license for an NHL betting site in New Jersey. Online sports betting in the state is taxed at 13.75% gross revenue. Evidently, this business yields quite a return to the state.

List of All the Active Teams in the NHL

NHL consists of 31 teams of which 24 are from the US and 7 from Canada. Each team is divided into the Western and Eastern Division. The Western Conference has 15 teams (7 in the Central Division and 8 in the Pacific Division). On the other hand, the Eastern Conference has 16 teams (8 per division)

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs

Metropolitan Division: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals

Western Conference

Central Division: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets

Pacific Division: Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights

NHL teams have been at a constant 30 until 2017. This was when the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken were added to the league. The latter is expected to be featured in 2021/ 2022 events.

Forbes 2019 lists “Original Six” teams as the most valuable teams. According to the source, the teams generated revenue as follows;

  • The New York Rangers – approximately $1.65 billion
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs – $1.5 billion
  • The Montreal Canadiens – $1.34 billion
  • The Chicago Blackhawks – $1.08 billion
  • The Boston Bruins – $1 billion

List of All the NHL Betting Lines

NHL betting has never been easier. To make bets that yield positive results, you have to master the betting markets. Make sure you study a bet type before embarking on it.  There are NHL parlays, NHL totals, NHL puck lines, and NHL moneylines.

Through the NHL futures bet, you can bet on the winner of the Stanley Cup finals. Since you predict a future event, you can also bet on the winner of next year’s MVP.

Some of the NHL betting lines are listed below:

Moneyline

In ice hockey, the moneyline bet focuses on the winning team. Usually, there’s an underdog and a favorite in NHL betting. Predicting a match against the New Jersey Devils and New Jersey Rangers would mean a favorite bet of -120 and an underdog of +140 respectively.

In such a case, the New Jersey Devils will be favored. You’ll have to risk $120 to win $100. On the contrary, New Jersey rangers must pay out $140 to win $100. As you can see, the favorite bet gives more money compared to the underdog bet. Moneyline bet is an excellent way to bet on any NHL game.

Puck Line Betting

This particular bet is a version of point spread betting in NHL. It’s all about betting that two teams will win the hockey match. Puck Line betting is usually set at 1.5 for both the underdog and the favorite. To make it clear, let’s assume a match of the New Jersey Devils against the New Jersey Rangers.

Using your puck line bet means a favorite bet (-220) on the New Jersey Devils and an underdog bet (+220) on the New Jersey Rangers. Of course, the favorite bet earns you $220 when you wager $100. On the other hand, you must risk $220 to get a $100 return. NHL puck lines yield excellent results when applied properly.

Totals (Over/Under)

This bet type is all about betting on the total goals two teams will win. It’s either the total or under bets that you focus on. The Islanders and Flyers total goals are set to 5:5. If the Flyers win 3-2, the under bet takes the wheel since the goal was set to just 5. For the Islanders, a 4-2 win means an over bet wins as it goes beyond the 5.

Sportsbooks don’t take any side but even out the scores for both teams. So, these under lines and over lines move according to the action.  To make money, sportsbooks take a percentage of the total bets placed. In gambling terms, it’s called “vig” or “juice”.

Parlays

NHL parlays mean placing multiple bets in expectation to win all of them. In case a single hand loses, the entire bet loses too. Parlay bets are believed to be high risk but also highly rewarding. They have higher odds compared to single bets. However, the payouts depend on the selections made.

For instance, you could place a parlay bet on the Panthers, Devils, and Sabres. If all the teams win, you earn as much as 6-1 according to the selections. You can win up to 10-12 teams in parlay betting. On top of that, you can mix up other bets and teams. The downside of this bet is that there’s difficulty in getting the right combination.

A List of All Available Awards a Player/Team Can Win

NHL puts in place several awards to recognize its well-performing players. Stanley Cup is one of the biggest awards this NJ franchise gives out. These awards apply to both the layers and the teams. Here are other awards you’ll find in NHL.

Championship

NHL championships are up for grabs in NJ NHL betting. This most prestigious award was bagged by Montreal Canadiens multiple times. Over time, they have 25 NHL championships. The team also boasts of 25 Stanley Cup championships.

Montreal Canadiens has also received consecutive Stanley Cup awards. Another award-winning NHL franchise is the Toronto Maple Leafs. It has achieved 13 Stanley Cup championships.

MVP

The MVP award is given to the most valuable player in the team. It’s also known as The Hart Memorial Trophy. New Jersey Devils couldn’t be more proud as one of their players represented them in the MVP award. In 2018, the New York Devils’ player named Taylor Hall won the award.  He was the first Devil’s player to ever win the coveted MVP award.

Finals MVP

The Finals MVP award is similarly known as The Conn Smythe Trophy. Usually, this award goes to the best player in the team during the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. Finals MVP has been awarded 53 times to 46 different players since 1964.

The award winner is selected by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. This group would elect the player who deserved the trophy. They did this after the final game of the Stanley Cup Finals had occurred.  Unlike other championships, Finals MVP is awarded based on the entire NHL post-season performance.

Defensive Player of the Year

The defensive player of the year goes to the player with the best defenses in the game. It was first awarded in 2014. This trophy is granted to the NHL’s top defense player who portrays all-round ability throughout the season.

The defensive player of the year award, also known as The James Norris Memorial, has been awarded 61 times to 26 players. Professional Hockey Writers’ Association cast a vote to distinguish the player with the best defenses in the given season.

Best Goalie

A sharp goaltender is a sure way to win those NHL matches. So, the best goalie is rewarded for a good job. Great names for the best goalies in NHL wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Martin Brodeur. This Canadian-American goalie has bagged several titles. In 2018 he received the title for the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Rookie of the Year

Rookie of the year in the NHL means that you receive the Calder Memorial Trophy. The winner of the season of 1993- 1994 was Martin Brodeur. Later on, in 1999-2000, Scott Stevens bagged the award. This annual trophy is granted to the best player in the first year of competition in the NHL

How Do We Rank the Best NHL Sportsbooks?

Coming up with a list of the best NHL sportsbooks is a daunting task. Since many of them have sprung in the recent past, it would be difficult to tell the best. However, factors such as the license, trustworthiness, and others help make the work of ranking the sites easier. Here’s an explanation of how each of the factors determines a good sportsbook;

License and Regulations

Placing your NHL bets should be done in a sportsbook that has a license. To ensure you don’t fall victim to illegal betting, watch out for sportsbooks with the NJDGE license. Having the New Jersey Directorate of Gaming Enforcement license isn’t everything though.

You need to exercise due diligence on your sportsbook of choice. Ensure it’s sanctioned by the relevant authorities.

There’s no limit to the number of casinos the state accepts provided they are licensed. Online casinos need to collaborate with a licensed partner in New Jersey. For casinos and racetracks, more than one license holder is allowed.

Online operators can also operate under more than one license. Since the cost of gambling licenses in NJ isn’t too high, more operators need to get one. It would cost you $400,000 and $250,000 responsible gaming fees. Therefore, there’s no such a big barrier for entry to this million-dollar business.

Safety and Security

You don’t just decide to play on any NHL sportsbook. You have to check whether it’s sanctioned by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Only then can you be sure that your site of choice is safe and secure to play at.

This is important because your banking details and personal information must be in safe hands. NHL sportsbooks use SSL encryption to store your information and keep it away from third parties.

Trustworthy and Reputation

We look for the reliability of certain sportsbooks. Confirming whether they can be trusted in offering players the best betting odds should be a priority. On top of that, you must consider the reputation of the betting site. If its history is good, then go for it.

If you can trust the sportsbook with your money, then it must be the best. That means that it doesn’t withhold winnings or keep away bonuses from the players. The sportsbooks in our list are transparent in all operations.

Number and Variety of Games

You need to choose a sportsbook with a wide variety of betting markets. As a result, your chances of winning are wide. Some of the most popular bets to place include proposition bets, futures, puck lines, money lines, teams, or parlays.

For any NHL game you choose to bet on, make sure you go for the bet type that’s likely to give you returns. Choose a sportsbook that also offers a variety of ice hockey games. In doing so, your betting options would be wider.

User Experience (App)

NHL sportsbooks have an app that makes betting convenient. This app is compatible with your mobile devices, both Android and Apple devices. Consequently, you can place bets on the NHL while on the go. When ranking NHL sportsbooks, we consider user experience. Make sure you check whether the site has an app that’s ready for download.

Bonuses and Promotions

Grabbing a bonus at NHL sportsbooks is the best way to make your betting rewarding. You’ll get lucrative signup bonuses when you sign up to any site. They can be worth up to thousands of dollars.

Here’s a list of some sites with the best sign up bonuses;

  • FanDuel – $500 risk free bet
  • DraftKings – $1,000 risk free bets / deposit match
  • FOX Bet – $1,000 risk free bets/ deposit bonus
  • PointsBet – $200 risk free bets
  • BetMGM – $500 risk free bets

Various bonuses and promotional offers also exist for you to choose from. You can enjoy risk free bets to use on the Stanley Cup or other NHL semi-finals. NHL betting provides great bonuses which are sometimes odd boosters. Alongside the free bets, you can find deposit match bonuses.

Seasonal bonuses and daily odds boosted bonuses make it easier for you to win the NHL bets. Keep checking on what’s available for each site as the offers keep changing.

Loyalty Program (VIP-Program)

NHL betting sportsbooks with a VIP-program are fantastic places to bet on. Maintaining loyalty status comes with several other perks. NHL sportsbooks reward their loyal players handsomely through the VIP program. All the sportsbooks we have ranked have something for their loyal players. They offer them VIP-program status.

Deposit and Withdrawal Options

The best NHL sportsbooks have plenty of banking options, including the Cash at Cage option. Consequently, your transactions wouldn’t be hindered when you provide ID verification documents. Before settling on the site to bet on it’s important to confirm if your preferred payment option is present.

If so, you can proceed to secure an account. You also need to check the fees charged on each method. If you do so, your transactions at NHL sportsbook will be hassle-free. However, you should note that all deposits via the Cash at Cage option are free of charge.

All the transactions at NHL sportsbooks via the Cash at Cage options have rules. You must be 21 years and above to make transactions. Besides, it’s mandatory to be physically present at the casino to transact in the Atlantic City.

Is it Legal to Bet on the NHL in NJ?

Yes, NHL betting in NJ is legal provided you’re playing on a licensed casino. As a rule of thumb, check the casino’s license before signing up for an account. This plus several other factors count for playing in a legal casino.

The legalization of betting in New Jersey came in 2018. Casinos offering NHL bets have sprung, thanks to the passing of gambling laws in the Garden State. Therefore, you have the freedom to place different types of NHL bets in NJ.

It’s also legal for persons over 21 years. You also have to be present in New Jersey to be able to place bets. This rule applies to online wagers and land-based wagers. In a nutshell, it’s illegal to bet outside the Garden State even if you’re doing it online. If you’re outside the state but using a VPN, it would also be illegal to place bets in New Jersey.

As a way of maintaining the law, NJ sportsbooks require you to use Geo-location software before placing a bet. Geo-comply software comes inbuilt in some smartphones and can also be downloaded on the desktop. Prepare to go through this location verification process in all NJ sportsbooks. After confirming your location, the software allows you to proceed.

NHL Betting in the Mobile

Betting while on the go is made possible by the NHL app. It’s compatible with your mobile device though it’s state-specific in some sportsbooks. So, download the app to get maximum entertainment and the flexibility that the mobile app offers.

NHL app allows you to perform the functions the desktop version offers even better. You can grab bonuses, place wagers of the betting market you love, and transact as you wish. It would also be hard to go to a sports event with your computer. So, a mobile app offers the convenience you need.

NHL app provides live betting functionality. Thus, placing live bets via the app as the game unfolds is now a reality. Note that some of the NHL apps are state-specific while others are universal.

This is a list of the state-specific apps:

  • Caesars
  • FOX Bet
  • Golden Nugget
  • 888 Sports NJ
  • Bet365 NJ
